It’s not every day we get to make history! This week, The Beijing Center proudly welcomed—for the first time ever—27 curious and enthusiastic students from the University of Lima, along with Internationalization Coordinator Claudia Valencia and David Barriga, our partner from AsiaB Consulting, for an unforgettable Beijing adventure. While they ventured to discover the streets of Beijing, this group of students was particularly inquisitive about anything and everything related to China; they asked about brands, stores, food, and costumes. Their visit was carefully tailored, combining lectures, company visits, and sightseeing at Beijing’s famous landmarks.
On the first day, they attended a lecture about an overview of Chinese Culture by Prof. David Moser. The professor discussed China’s employment pressure, attributing it to its large population. He emphasized that effective fertility policies depend significantly on governmental influence and enforcement. Students agreed and pointed out that similar scenarios occurred in Peru, citing family planning initiatives in the 1960s and 1970s, supported by international organizations, aiming to enhance family health and reduce poverty through contraceptive provision. Prof. Timothy Bian gave the following lectures on China’s Economic Rise: Transition, Development, Incoming Challenges, and Belt and Road. They learned about the different stages of China’s economic growth and how the pandemic impacted the economy. Later, they openly debated the controversial Chancay Port, a major infrastructure project in Peru involving substantial Chinese investment. The discussion focused on the project’s potential economic benefits, such as increased trade and employment opportunities, alongside concerns raised by local communities regarding environmental impacts.
Additionally, they had the opportunity to visit iFlytek, an IT company focused on voice recognition software, AI scientific research assistants, and AI medical assistants. Here, they learned about their stats, products, and applications, broadening their minds to high-tech solutions and how they can be adapted to Peru’s culture. And, of course, we had to take them to the Forbidden City! one of Beijing’s most important landmarks. Our amazing guide, Ivan, taught them about the unique architecture, which embodies the meaning of the name of China (中国). The main gate is designed as a square, symbolizing Earth, while the other side ends with an arch representing the Sky. Also, did you know the emperor had 27 beds in his quarters? The idea was to confuse any potential attackers, as all the beds were covered with thick curtains, making it impossible to tell which one the emperor was sleeping in. This was just one of many security measures implemented to protect the emperor. Afterward, the group enjoyed a long stroll and a wonderful photo session at sunset, with the magnificent Forbidden City as the backdrop.
As part of their academic exploration, the ULima Students were invited to participate in an informative session at Peking University’s prestigious Yenching Academy—PKU is China’s Top university and is ranked 13th globally according to the QS World University Rankings 2025. Professor Lu Yang introduced the program’s highlights, admission criteria, and how participation in such a prestigious initiative can significantly boost career prospects. Additionally, two current Yenching scholars—one from Nigeria and another with U.S. and Peruvian roots—shared personal stories, motivating the ULima students to consider furthering their education abroad. The Peruvian scholar, especially, inspired the students by explaining how his journey at Yenching has opened doors to a global network and diverse career opportunities.
Another highlight of their journey was the iconic Great Wall of China—one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Have you ever seen the Great Wall from above? After a Chinese-style feast at the top of the Mutianyu section, students ascended to the top by cable car. Once at the top, they had time to climb the highest towers. One student stood mesmerized, saying she wanted to engrave the unforgettable scenery in her memory forever. Finally, students descended in style, speeding down the exciting toboggan ride—definitely a memorable way to wrap up their visit!
The Great Wall experience did not end there. We were accompanied by Tai Chi Professor Howard Hao, who taught the fundamentals of Tai Chi, how this historical practice represents Chinese Culture, and how it has been ingrained in China for generations. This session was a unique experience at sunset, with the golden mountains as the background. At the end of the Tai Chi class, one of the students approved of Prof. Hao and said his English accent was similar to Matthew McConaughey’s, an American actor known for his role in Interstellar, among other movies; Prof. Hao laughed, flattered by the comparison, and joked, “alright, alright, alright!”.
The last stop was at the PromPeru Office with the trade and tourism counselor for India and China, Mr. Luis Miguel Cabello Arroyo. Although he was physically in India negotiating trade agreements, Mr. Cabello was eager to connect virtually with students from his alma mater. Using Tencent technology, he gave an insightful online presentation filled with anecdotes and humor. As a proud Alum, Mr. Cabello reminisced about his university days, emphasizing how his education helped him manage renowned companies in Peru, transporting over 600 containers a year. His inspiring speech reminded students how education shapes careers, urging them to proudly represent Peru in future endeavors and to find greater success. Claudia Valencia concluded the session by encouraging students to learn from Mr. Cabello’s presentation, which one student described as an excellent summary of their International Trade class in Peru.
The University of Lima students left Beijing with memories and knowledge that will last a lifetime. They experienced a well-rounded journey with valuable insights from leading experts, discovering iconic landmarks, and exploring Chinese culture. As they return Home, we hope they can use this newfound knowledge to deepen the friendship between China and Peru. We can’t wait to welcome more ULima students in the future—our doors are always open!

TBC loaned three rare books to The Great Confucius exhibition at the Beijing Confucian Temple and Imperial College Museum, showcasing the spread of Confucian thought in Europe and centuries of cultural exchange.
On September 21, 2026, TBC contributed 29 rare books and maps from its collection to the Sino-French Cultural Heritage Exhibition at the Beijing Administration Institute.
TBC participated in the 2026 INCLUSION Conference on the Bund in Shanghai, where Executive Director Dr. Simon Koo joined discussions on AI, human-centric values, and the implications of technological innovation for society.
TBC joined the 2026 AJCU-AP Annual Meeting in Solo, Indonesia to exchange perspectives on AI, Jesuit higher education, and regional collaboration.
