Our History

What makes us unique is our place in a long and storied tradition of Jesuit education, one that teaches us that true cultural engagement begins with friendship.

HOW WE GOT HERE

In the Footsteps of Ricci, Schall, and Verbiest

Long before Ron Anton, S.J., founded TBC in 1998, Jesuits came to Beijing to learn. Matteo Ricci, S.J. (利玛窦), arrived in 1601 after years of studying China’s language and classics. His friendship with the scholar Xu Guangqi (徐光启) became a true exchange: Xu opened Chinese learning to Ricci, and together they translated Euclid into Chinese.

Those who followed built on that friendship. Johann Adam Schall von Bell, S.J. (汤若望), came to Beijing in 1630 to work with Xu Guangqi on reforming the Chinese calendar, and later served the Shunzhi Emperor as Director of the Imperial Observatory. Ferdinand Verbiest, S.J. (南怀仁), succeeded him, became a teacher and close friend of the Kangxi Emperor, and in 1673 designed the bronze instruments of the Beijing Ancient Observatory. All three are buried in Beijing’s Zhalan Cemetery.

Their courage, humility, and respect remain our model. Today we follow in their footsteps by giving students, faculty, and visiting professionals a supportive place to begin their own engagement with China. For them, as for the Jesuits who came before, “China is the classroom.”

A Jesuit Education

Jesuit education draws its inspiration from the values of the Gospel and also from the liberal education of the Greco-Roman tradition, helping young men and women to become free citizens. Jesuit education takes the whole person into account and fosters not only intellectual development, but also moral and spiritual growth. Intellect and faith are seen as complementary, not contradictory.

TBC was established in 1998 as an apostolate of the Chinese Province of the Society of Jesus, with the support of Jesuit universities in the United States (AJCU).

A Global Jesuit Community

TBC lives the magis through close ties with the global Jesuit community. We work with Jesuit institutions around the world, from partner universities in the United States to journals in Europe, and we are a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in Asia Pacific (AJCU-AP). We practise cura personalis through student retreats rooted in Ignatian traditions such as the Examen, and through opportunities for service learning.
