Fall Photography Contest

The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived—The Beijing Center (TBC) is thrilled to announce the winners of our Fall Photography Contest! These beautiful photographs were captured through the lenses of our talented exchange students, who come to China each semester for a journey that truly expands their horizons. For those with a passion for travel, culture, or photography, this contest is the highlight, inviting students to explore China’s diverse landscapes and cultures and then convey their unique experiences through the art of photography.

This fall, our students embarked on 2,050 miles along the legendary Silk Road, stopping at some of the most popular locations in Chinese history. Imagine beginning in Xi’an, the ancient capital that marks the starting point of the Silk Road, and moving westward through Linxia, Lanzhou, Dunhuang, Turpan, and finally, Kashgar. These places are characterized by their blend of cultures, history, and the natural beauty of remote deserts, mountains, and historic towns. This year, we were joined by Mars, Jen, and Thomas, three students with diverse backgrounds and fresh perspectives, all eager to document their journey. We gave them a challenge: capture what inspires you, what fascinates you, what moves you about China.

The results were astonishing. Each picture tells a story not just about the locations but about the way our students see China through their own eyes. From movie-worthy landscapes to quiet, candid moments with locals, these photographs reveal how different details resonate with each student. It’s exciting to witness what captures their attention and what they find curious or beautiful, whether it’s the amazing desert landscapes of Dunhuang, the colorful bazaars of Kashgar, or a simple smile with a local vendor along the way.

To celebrate their hard work and creativity, TBC hosted an unveiling ceremony that felt almost like an art gallery opening but with a close community vibe. Students and staff gathered around the displays, moving from photo to photo, and a sense of anticipation filled everyone as we revealed the winners. Each student was given a moment of recognition with a certificate, a prize, and, of course, lots of cheers and applause!

The winners of this semester’s contest were a perfect reflection of the journey’s variety and depth:

  • Best Scenery Photo: Jen Willard captured a breathtaking landscape, showing the rugged beauty of the Silk Road.
  • Best People Photo: Minh Tran Trinh (Mars) won with a portrait that beautifully captures the warmth and personality of a Silk Road local, a reminder of the friendships and connections that often form in unexpected places.
  • Best Theme Series (Roads): Jen Willard’s series on roads earned her a second award, documenting the iconic paths.
  • Honorable Mention: Thomas Helm was recognized for his work that captured the essence of his travels.

The evening culminated in a true TBC style—with a pizza party! After the ceremony, everyone gathered around for some well-deserved relaxation and bonding. As pizzas disappeared, students swapped stories from their travels, sharing not just memories but newfound friendships. There’s something uniquely satisfying about coming together over food, and for many of our international students, it’s a comforting reminder of home while also celebrating the friendships and experiences they’re building here in Beijing.

The winning photos are now on display along the TBC entrance hallway, designed to resemble a traditional Beijing hutong. The north wall features the Silk Road photos, showcasing the historical and rugged beauty of the journey, while the south wall displays images from our spring trip to Yunnan Province, highlighting the vibrant cultures and landscapes of China’s southwest. Each photo on display is a window into the diverse perspectives of our students, an invitation for everyone to see China through new, youthful eyes.

Congratulations to all our talented photographers! Thank you for sharing your perspectives and bringing the Silk Road’s spirit to life for all of us. These images offer a glimpse into the experiences that define life at The Beijing Center. And who knows? Perhaps in the next semester, you’ll have the chance to contribute your own story to the TBC community!

Heaven in Beijing: TBC’s Visit to the Temple of Heaven

Beijing’s Temple of Heaven may be one of, if not, the most iconic tourist sites in Beijing. Constructed starting back in 1406, around the same time as the Forbidden City and the other respective temples of the Sun, Earth and Moon.

Cultural Exchange, Chinese University Style

Another one of the more irreplaceable experiences we have in China as students is the amount of cultural exchange we get to participate in. While The Beijing Center organizes plenty of culture-based events, from tourist activities to arts workshops, there’s something about engaging with other people our own age in cultural exchange that’s really special.

Over this past weekend, some of our students enrolled at Minzu University of China took their annual Spring Outing – this year, to Gubei Water Town. Situated about a 2-hour drive northeast of Beijing, the April weather made it absolutely perfect to explore for a spring outing. It surrounds various canals and offshoots of Yuanyang lake.

Beijing’s Hutongs: From Snuff Bottles to Exploration with a View

If you ever want to get a taste of Old Beijing, by far one of the best ways is to visit the hutongs. They’ve conceptually been around all the way since the 1200s, and in their most modern forms exist as protected alleyways and streets surrounded by old traditional houses and neighborhoods in the heart of Beijing and are recognized in China to be an important part of cultural heritage in the city.
