TBC recently hosted a week-long cultural immersion experience for a delegation from Universidad del Pacífico in Peru. The delegation consisted of students and faculty from the Faculty of Engineering and Business at the University of the Pacific in Peru. One of the professors was visiting China for the second time, and his first trip during the 2008 Beijing Olympics left a deep impression on him. After 16 years, he returned and marveled at the great changes in China.

To enrich their visit, TBC curated a comprehensive itinerary of courses and activities designed to delve deep into the essence of Chinese culture. Among the highlights was a Tai Chi class led by Professor Howard Hao, offering students a tangible connection to the spirit of Chinese martial arts and the broader allure of traditional practices.

Further academic insights were provided by Prof. Timothy Bian of the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) and a TBC professor, whose lecture “China’s Economic Rise: Transition, Development and Incoming Challenges” ignited dynamic discussions, enhancing the group’s comprehension of China’s economic evolution and its global implications.

Prof. Narisa Dai from UIBE focused on the topic of “Doing Business in China: Opportunities and Challenges,” offering insights from another perspective. Her lecture stimulated an active exchange of ideas among the students, allowing them to explore the complexities of conducting business in China and the potential opportunities it presents.

The educational experience extended beyond the classroom, with cultural tours to Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and a memorable excursion to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. These visits offered immersive insights into China’s historical grandeur and the ingenuity of its ancient architects, enriched by the natural beauty of the surroundings.

This visit from Universidad del Pacífico not only facilitated a deep dive into Chinese culture and history but also underscored the value of cultural exchanges in fostering mutual understanding and respect between the diverse cultures of China and South America.

Acrobatics, Pandas, Temple of Heaven, and More: Weekend Excursions in Beijing

The past few weekends have been some of the most exciting of the entire semester, full of trips to the zoo, mountain hikes, ancient parks, and more! Our first trip out of many was a visit to the Beijing Zoo. I had mentioned earlier in the semester that I wanted to see some pandas, since I was in China after all, and our TBC friend Andy made it happen.

Weekend Trip to Shanghai

Spending a whole semester in Beijing, I knew I had to make the trip down south and check out Shanghai, and the city certainly lived up to the expectations. Everyone describes Shanghai as this super futuristic metropolis, and after spending a weekend there I understand why it has this reputation.
