On July 16, 2021, The University of the South and The Beijing Center (TBC) signed an admission agreement to further support international students’ transition to an undergraduate program in the US. The Guaranteed Admission Program agreement will be in effect for five years, guiding students to successfully complete their bachelor’s degree at the University of the South, following preparation at TBC.

Upcoming university students will receive guaranteed admission to an undergraduate program at Sewanee after meeting the program requirements through TBC. During their time at TBC, students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0/4.0 on all transferable coursework. In addition, international students will need to demonstrate English language proficiency through an accredited test, such as TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, etc., following the outlined requirements part of Sewanee’s international admissions process. Alongside, upon enrollment in the Guaranteed Admission Program, students will have up to three years to complete their transfer as an undergraduate with the necessary coursework of up to 64 transferable credits.

“We are grateful to host Sewanee students at TBC again, having seen the progress that previous students have been able to achieve during their time with us. In an evolving global education climate, diverse academic experiences are more in demand, and we have been providing just that for our students and will continue to do so with our upcoming cohort,” Executive Director of TBC, Dr. Simon Koo.

Through this pathway program, international students will reside on the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) campus, having access to a traditional university student life, culturally adapted education style, and the vibrant Beijing city life – all of which will greatly benefit their transition into US student life.

Founded in 1998, The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies (TBC) is a center of higher education in mainland China committed to fostering mutual understanding between China and other cultures through cultural exchange, education and research. What makes us unique is our placement in a long and storied tradition of Jesuit education, one that teaches us that true cultural engagement starts first with friendship.

The Pathway Program at TBC is focused and rigorous, designed for Chinese students who are interested in obtaining a bachelor’s degree abroad. Pathway students spend one to two years taking transferable courses at The Beijing Center while preparing themselves for their entry into university in another country.

The Beijing Center continually works to establish articulation agreements with undergraduate institutions around the world to facilitate Chinese student transfers into bachelor’s degree programs. At the dawn of the Age of Enlightenment, as the 18th century drew to a close, the Western world was eager for knowledge—driven by a philosophical movement that championed reason and science. King Louis XV of France asked for the advice of his trusted Minister of State, Henri Bertin, about how to reform the spirit of the nation, after giving it some thought, Bertin famously responded, “Sire, to inoculate the French with the Chinese spirit.”
