The Beijing Center Relocates to Beijing’s Embassy District to Further Its Mission After 27 Years

May 11, 2025

Beijing — On this day, May 11, which marks the anniversary of the passing of Matteo Ricci, S.J., The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies (TBC) is honored to announce its relocation to Beijing’s Embassy District. This move—carefully planned over the past several years—represents a significant step in furthering TBC’s founding mission to promote intercultural understanding and advance East-West dialogue.

Since its establishment in 1998, and after more than two decades on the campus of the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) since 2002, TBC has served as a vital platform for academic exchange, cultural encounter, and intellectual exploration. We extend our deepest gratitude to UIBE for their years of generous support and collaboration, which have been instrumental to the Center’s growth.

Relocating to the heart of Beijing’s international community—the Embassy District— positions the Center to deepen its global impact. Surrounded by diplomatic missions, cultural institutions, and international organizations, the new site will enable TBC to further embody its role as a bridge between China and the world. The location will foster expanded dialogue, enhance educational outreach, and facilitate stronger partnerships across cultures and disciplines.

This announcement falls on the day we remember Matteo Ricci, whose life and legacy continue to inspire our work. As one of the earliest Jesuit scholars to immerse himself in Chinese culture with deep respect and intellectual humility, Ricci laid the foundation for meaningful cultural dialogue. At TBC, we strive to walk in his footsteps by building genuine connections across traditions and by creating spaces for understanding in an increasingly complex global landscape.

Further details about the new site will be announced in due course. For continuing updates and upcoming initiatives, please visit www.thebeijingcenter.org.

Over spring break, I was given the opportunity by TBC to take a scholarship-supported trip to Macau, and from there, enjoyed just over three days in Hong Kong. Lamma Island, a small island in Hong Kong, is where most of my mom’s China stories take place.
