COURSEs

TBC’s study abroad program adopts the ChinaLens system. Students take two core classes with the entire cohort, and also take classes specific to their academic interests either in the Business or Society category. There is also the required Chinese language course which is offered at all levels of Chinese. Students will be assigned to different levels according to the results of a Chinese language placement test. The program allows students to take 12-19 credits total. 

The program concludes with a capstone project conducted at our campus in Kunming, Yunnan Province.

Compulsory Course

Engaging China: Yunnan Excursion

Course code: TBC 1101

3 CREDITS

The purpose of the Yunnan Excursion is to afford the student an in-depth experience of the ethnological background of the southern border regions of China. At the same time the excursion provides a general survey of the history and culture of Yunnan.

Selecting Levels of Chinese Language Courses

Course code: TBC 1010、1020、1030、1040、2010、2020、2030、2040、2050、2060

3 CREDITS

This course extends students’ knowledge of Chinese vocabulary and grammar and improves their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will take selecting levels of Chinese language based on their Chinese level.

Introduction to Chinese Martial Arts

Strengthen your balance, posture, flexibility, discipline, and coordination. Learn useful means to relieve stress rooted in Chinese history and culture, and maybe even test your skills at competition!

Religions in China

Course code: TBC 2500

3 CREDITS

This course is a survey of various religions in China that may include, not only Confucianism and Taoism, but also Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Manicheism and popular or “folk” religion. The course will consider the function of these various religions in the development of Chinese society and their significance in Chinese civilization from ancient mythology to contemporary practices and developments.

BUSINESS TRACK

International Financial Management

This course examines the international dimensions of financial management. It introduces additional economic and financial opportunities/challenges faced by multinational corporations.

International Business

This course aims to develop your understanding and appreciation of the strategic thinking and practices required to act internationally and to successfully conduct business with people, business and governments in other countries.

Social TRACK

Traditional Chinese Philosophy

Course code: TBC 1500

3 CREDITS

Students will investigate Chinese ancient philosophy in a way to let its own tendencies be sensed and appreciated. Topics include Confucianism, Mencius, Sunzi, Taoism, Legalism, Yin-Yang School, Tung Chung-shu, Chinese Buddhism and Neo-Confucianism. In addition, students learn about the relations among different schools or different thinkers in the same school. Comparisons between Chinese philosophies and western ones are encouraged.

Classical Chinese Literature in Translation

Course code: TBC 1141

3 CREDITS

This course is a survey of the classical Chinese literature from ancient time to the fall of Qing Dynasty. Students will reach aesthetical appreciations and cultural understandings of classical Chinese literature, and grasp the styles and creative skills of different Chinese poets and writers. They will learn to read literary texts within their particular Chinese social, historical, cultural and mental contexts.
