Dear readers,

I found myself at this moment on the other side of the world, writing to you about my adventure here in China. If you ever have the opportunity to travel, do not hesitate, because I promise when you cross the ocean, a magical world full of wonders to discover will be waiting for you, and it will be something you have never seen before. Where I can start? Maybe first I’ll tell you a little bit about where I come from; I’m Catalina Gonzalez, and I was born in Bogotá D. C, in the heart of Colombia. My trip here took me by surprise, since I had nothing planned and I never imagined living in Beijing during the change of colors of the seasons during a whole year. Maybe I could start with that idea, the idea of living in a place that is always changing, and you never know what to expect when the sun comes up.

When I first stepped on the land of this country, I didn’t want to blink just so I wouldn’t miss a thing. Sometimes we spend our lives waiting for something big to happen, when we realize too late that the only thing that really happens is life.  The time here flies in front of your eyes and you can see the development of what would appear to be a civilization of the future, although it peculiarly keeps at the same time the traditional in the culture of its people. In China, you find the contrast of the old and the modern, of the end and the beginning, of the implicit and the explicit, of the future and the past. I could not tell in a word what the journey meant for me. I think the greatest legacy was learning from the oriental way of thinking, as everything is represented in an infinite flow and at the same time is complemented in a perfect way. As the big Panda and the mountains give us the wisdom of not thinking only in white or black, on the contrary, think of Yin & Yang.

From the ancient dynasties it is observed how a nation has evolved through what it has learned from its past, and now it surprises me… They build skyscrapers in a matter of days, they raise the longest bridges of the world above the sea, they travel in trains that fly like dragons on the rails, they manufacture throughout the country infrastructure to reach the energy of the sun, the wind, and the water. They have a great respect for nature and dominate their power to harmonize the community with the river and mountains. I couldn’t tell you what I found in China, because I think China has found me. At first, I didn’t know the purpose of coming to the other side of the ocean, but don’t worry, I promise then you’ll find out. For now, I tell you that your dreams look so achievable here, you see them so close that you can almost touch them with your fingertips.

There are still many mysteries to discover, many secrets that China has not yet revealed to the world and will always be kept in the roots of the Yellow mountains, within the armor of the Terracotta Warriors, in the stones of the Yellow River, in the eyes of the Panda bears, in the bricks of the Chinese wall, and in the heart of the Forbidden City. From the first emperor to the last we continue to learn more about China, its history and what it is now granting to the rest of the universe. Humanity has gone through many periods that have marked the evolution of what we know, in other times different nations reigned on Earth, but now the golden century belongs to China and it is time to look to the east.

Queridos lectores,
