Our History

The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies was founded in 1998 and first was located at Beijing Athletic University. In 2002, the University of International Business and Economics and TBC joined hands. The Beijing Center was allowed to make extensive renovations, including bringing in builders to shape the Hutong corridor in the style of Beijing ancient neighborhoods and delicately bringing in a 19th century horse cart. Multiple doorways were altered or constructed, and eaves installed in the Scholar’s Cottage. In addition, UIBE provides a private student lounge exclusively for TBC students in the International Students’ Dorm.

Our Spaces

With dynastic, historic, artistic, and poetic elements present in every corner, The Beijing Center facilities offer a sense of community. Both The Beijing Center in Beijing and Kunming Liya Center in Kunming are versatile spaces used to educate, promote global relations and cultural exchange, and host our friends and affiliates. The Beijing Center can host events of up to 130 people between the four classrooms, office, and Anton Library. Kunming Liya Center can host events of up to 100 people between the three classrooms, lounges, and open floor space.

Classrooms

TBC’s classrooms are named after famous Chinese and Western Jesuit scholars, such as Matteo Ricci and Xu Guangqi.

All classrooms are equipped with whiteboards and screenboards, are decorated with historical and Jesuit-relevant artifacts and images, have projector capacities and comfortable chairs, and are also equipped with air filtration and quality control technology.

One of our newest classrooms is the Tea Room, which is a space to share culture in a more intimate and traditional setting. It’s able to hold up to fifteen people, with space for two tea masters.

The Anton Library for Chinese Studies

The Anton Library has over 27,000 volumes, two lounge areas decorated after the provinces of Yunnan and Tibet, and is decorated with historical and cultural artifacts. More information about The Anton Library can be found by clicking here.

Open Office

The Open Office area is where TBC staff work and where guests can tour our extensive collection of historical and cultural treasures. It encapsulates the Director’s Office, which has items spanning thousands of years, the Hutong Hallway, which was constructed in the style of Beijing’s traditional alleyway housing, the Conference Room with dozens of original copies of Jesuit-made maps, a lounge, a general desk area, and the Departmental Offices. One of the most popular spots to find students is in the Student Life office, which is always open to offer students water, snacks, and a place to chat.

The Outside Facade

Kunming Liya Center’s doors open on the corner of a street, representing our dedication to being a bridge between China and the rest of the world. The large floor to ceiling windows on both sides welcome in the sun in the same way that we welcome in people of different cultures and ideas. Walking down the street, you can’t miss us!

Lounges

In addition to classrooms, KLC has two lounges and plenty of office space for faculty and staff. The lounges are a great place for students to chat and relax, as well as more informal classes and lectures to be held. The offices can be used by both long-term and short-term KLC program leaders.

Classrooms

The three classrooms at KLC can host around fifty students. Bright and airy, the classrooms have state-of-the-art technology capabilities and are suitable for both discussion and lecture based learning.
